MANUAL TRANSMISSION SERVICE
The main difference in operating a car with a stick shift (or manual transmission) vs. one with automatic transmission is that you need to shift gears based on the vehicle’s speed and this requires the use of the clutch pedal and the gear shift (stick). When the clutch pedal is depressed the clutch is disengaged, causing the engine and the transmission to be separated. Gears can then be selected at this time or the car can be stopped without stalling.
Automatic transmissions also have a clutch, but a torque converter is used instead of a clutch pedal to separate the engine from the transmission. This all happens automatically without the need of driver input in automatic transmissions.
Only about 7% of all new vehicles sold today have manual transmission and only 19% of all vehicles models come with the manual transmission option. Manual transmissions are better on fuel mileage than automatics and are usually $1,000-$3,000 less expensive when purchasing a new vehicle. Repair costs are usually less with manual transmissions as they are less labour intensive, and require less parts to rebuild.
Many people feel that driving a manual transmission is tougher than driving an automatic- but this is mainly due to personal preference and experience. However, much like learning how to ride a bike- once you get the muscle memory down it becomes like second nature.
Like automatic transmissions, manual trans need servicing to stay in proper working order, something many people don’t know or think about. Regularly changing the fluid in your gearbox will help insure a long, smooth ride and add years to the life of your clutch.
